DeafNT

DeafNT is a community service organisation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people and their families in the Northern Territory (NT). DeafNT is auspiced by Deaf Children Australia. With small grants, DCA is able to support a small part-time staff group of 2. Cost recovery from Auslan classes maintains that program.

DeafNT is contracted to the Northern Territory Department of Health to provide information, referral, community capacity building and advocacy support.

This includes:
* General information and referral regarding hearing and generic health and community services
* Support (and advocacy) to access services and supports
* “Drop in” to assist clients with completing forms, responding to letters etc
* Community consultation to help direct the energies of DeafNT

DCA has also received a small grant from the Department of Education – Community Grants Program to provide outreach services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the NT. The DCA Outreach Program works with students, families, educators and other professionals as appropriate, to identify and provide professional support to the needs of the student. This could be face to face where appropriate, or through the use of video conferencing. Support is tailored to the student. This is very successful for remote students.

DCA Outreach can include areas such as:

* Communication and language development
* Auslan Tuition
* Role model and mentoring
* Independent Living Skills

DeafNT also provides Auslan classes which have healthy enrolments and increasing demand for higher levels as students progress. It complements the community gatherings facilitated by DeafNT (Auslan conversation club). DeafNT is also providing video outreach through NDIS in Victoria and internal DCA Auslan Classes for staff.
