The Deaf Society of NSW’s Board of Directors today announced that they have appointed Ms Leonie Jackson as Chief Executive Officer, effective 18 May 2015. Leonie succeeds former CEO Ms Sharon Everson who stepped down in April after almost 38 years of continuous service to the Deaf Society.
“After a thorough and deliberate executive search and selection process, the Board of Directors is delighted that Leonie will, with guidance from the Board, lead the staff of the Deaf Society as we navigate the evolving and expanding landscape of disability support,” said Alastair McEwin, President of the Deaf Society. “With over 20 years of experience working for organisations with a deaf-focus, Leonie brings a wealth of experience from both the corporate sector and the Deaf Community. She will also be the first deaf CEO of the Deaf Society of NSW, a proud moment for the organisation.”
Leonie has held a variety of senior positions, most recently Head of Education and Research at Ai-Media, leading the development and introduction of Ai-Live for deaf and hard of hearing people. She has also launched the Ai-Media’s community internship program, providing valuable work experience for young people with disability. She was also part of the senior executive team that developed Ai-Media into the successful organisation that it is today.
“I am honoured by the confidence expressed in me today by the Deaf Society’s Board”, said Leonie. “As a deaf person and a mother of a deaf child, I will advocate strongly on behalf of the Deaf Community in order to break down barriers, create choices and support every deaf and hard of hearing person with achieving their goals. Working with the dedicated team and Board, I am confident that the Deaf Society will be a strong and robust organisation for the full roll-out of the NDIS.”
Leonie has been and continues to be a strong advocate for deaf people, bringing a strong combination of vision and corporate realism with her. She is a member of Parents of Deaf Children’s Management Committee, Australian Hearing’s Paediatrics Program Advisory Committee, and convenor of Deaf Australia’s Working Group on Early Intervention and Education for deaf and hard of hearing children. The role of CEO continues Leonie’s long association with the Society having previously served as both a board member and teacher.
