Fifteen year old Deaflympics swimmer, DCA youth ambassador and youth grant recipient Alex Kirchner is appearing on Channel 7’s House of Wellness. The crew filmed Alex for their House Hero segment while Alex was in Sydney for the National Swimming Championships.
House of Wellness’ Felicity Rankin said they wanted to feature Alex as “each episode currently features an inspirational hero who may have overcome adversity themselves and channelled this to help others, or they are helpers within the community and have volunteered for many years.” Alex is an inspiration to many and he and his mum Libby have already shared their journey with several groups such as parents at Taralye and audiologists at Australian Hearing.
Alex is well on his way to pursuing his dreams of success on the international stage. DCA helped Alex compete at the 23rd Summer Deaflympics 2017. Afterwards, Alex said, “I was very proud of my achievements walking away from this competition placing 4th in the men’s 50 and 100 metre backstroke and 6th in the 200 metre backstroke.”
After the recent National Swimming Championships, Libby told us, “Alex swam finals in four out of his five men’s races at the National Championships and he finished with a silver medal in the 50m freestyle which he was so happy with. So to finish 2nd, 4th, 5th and 7th in the Australian mainstream was great!”
