    Deaf Children Australia is seeking a Part Time Psychologist and Youth Support Workers to support deaf and hard of hearing children, young people and families. Please see position descriptions and Auslan videos for the positions below.

    Psychologist
    12 Month Parental Leave Position
    (3 days per week)

    Do you want to work for an organisation that really cares about changing young people’s lives, achieving positive outcomes and working with clients to reach their full potential?

    Are you a registered psychologist with experience, knowledge and an interest in working with deaf and hard of hearing children, young people and their families?

    In this part time, 12 month role you will:

    1. Provide specialised evidence-based psychological services to deaf and hard of hearing children, young people and their families.
    2. Administer cognitive and behavioural assessments for deaf and hard of hearing children and young people aged 0 to 23 years to facilitate the appropriate support in the context of their level of deafness and the status of their cognitive and/or behavioural abilities.
    3. Provide written reports to adult clients, parents, schools and other relevant support services regarding the needs of the child and the recommended best practice.
    4. Develop and evaluate appropriate intervention plans.
    5. Provide evidence based psychological strategies for deaf and hard of hearing young people experiencing emotional, behavioural, cognitive or learning difficulties.

    You will require:

    • Current full registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
    • Minimum 2 years’ experience working in disability or deaf and hard of hearing sectors and knowledge of deafness in relation to children and young people and the impact on social, emotional development and wellbeing.
    • Proven knowledge of a range of theories and practice modalities applicable to the mental health and wellbeing of children, families and young people.

    • Supporting and mentoring deaf and hard of hearing young people at different stages of life
    • Removing barriers and enhancing skills and opportunities

    We need Youth Support Workers in the Eastern Suburbs, Melbourne Metro and Geelong areas, to join our progressive and passionate team.

    Our goals are to work with deaf and hard of hearing children and young people to:

    • Experience increased self-esteem and positive relationships and connections within the community
    • Participate in their community
    • Access age appropriate educational, social and emotional development

    In addition to this is supporting young people so they have the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve their own wellbeing and feel safe and supported in their family, school and community.

    The ideal candidate must have:

    • Qualifications in youth work, Social Science or equivalent skills and experience
    • Good communication skills, including capacity to advocate on behalf of young people
    • Experience in group work
    • Organisational skills, in particular managing individual client needs
    • Ability to work independently
    • Knowledge of hearing loss, particularly in relation to young people
    • Confident and able to maintain purposeful and positive relationships with young people
    • Flexibility in working hours
    • Auslan skills, and a knowledge of Deaf community and culture
    • A current Victorian Drivers Licence
    • A current Working with Children check and Police check
