This is a call out for Auslan/English Interpreters to be involved in Deaf Children Australia’s 2016 shadow interpreting program with Opera Australia in Victoria and New South Wales!

Opera Australia’s Schools Company is one of the touring arms of Opera Australia and each year performs around 400 shows in country and metro Victoria and New South Wales. The productions presented are aimed at primary school aged children and are usually adapted versions of well-known operas which are performed on main stages all over the world. These adaptations are shorter- around 50 minutes and are sung and acted in English. They are vibrant, full of colour and humour and aim to give children a taste of opera and a culture that is often not available to many of them. Since 2010 Opera Australia and Deaf Children Australia have worked to make these show accessible to Deaf children and their families by providing shadow Auslan Interpreted performances.

Deaf Children Australia is looking for shadow Auslan/English Interpreters for the New South Wales Tour of Hansel & Gretel and the Victorian tour The Magic Flute

For the New South Wales season of Hansel and Gretel interpreters need to be available Friday 19 February and April 18- May 4 (specific dates and times partially negotiable).

For the Victorian season of The Magic Flute interpreters need to be available: one date in May TBC and July 4- 19 (specific dates and times partially negotiable).

If you are keen to be part of the team but are not available for all dates, please contact us as some of these days are flexible and can be negotiated once the interpreting team has been appointed.

You will working with a wonderful creative Opera Australia cast, crew, director and a as a team of interpreters and Deaf consultant/Auslan Coach. After the rehearsal period, the interpreters will embark on tour of regional and metro areas performing the show. In previous years, there has been anywhere up to 10 performances of the show. This is a unique project,  not least because you are on stage working with the cast but also because you get so many chances to perfect your craft! It really is a rewarding experience and we encourage new and experienced Auslan/English Interpreters to apply!
